Michigan Hang Tag Guidance

C
Written by Christina Tamaroglio

Michigan law requires certain pricing information to be clearly displayed on merchandise offered under a lease-to-own agreement.

What Is Required?

Under Michigan rental-purchase law, every item displayed or offered under a rental-purchase agreement must have a tag or label attached that clearly shows:

  • The cash price of the item

  • The amount of the periodic payment

  • The total number of payments required for ownership

These disclosures must be:

  • Clearly visible

  • Easy to read

  • Numbered

  • Attached directly to the merchandise or displayed with the item

What Merchants Need to Do

  • Attach a Hang Tag to Eligible Merchandise
Any merchandise offered through a lease-to-own or rental-purchase program in Michigan should include a compliant hang tag or pricing disclosure.

  • Ensure Required Information Is Accurate
The information on the tag should match the customer’s lease terms and payment schedule.

  • Keep Tags Visible
Hang tags should remain clearly visible to customers viewing the merchandise in-store.

  • Minimum Required Information
A Michigan hang tag should include:

    • Cash Price

    • Periodic Payment Amount

    • Total Number of Payments

Merchants may choose to include additional information for consistency across states or internal compliance practices.
